the films

The Notes from... films are films created by Tom Payne and Sam Christie documenting changes in our society. In a world that seems gradually to be moving toward one single ambition (which is yet to be defined), identity, and people's concept of it, is in flux.

Notes from... is a trilogy of films. One is shot in Krakow, Poland, another in Mid Wales and one in Spain. The films are united by the links between key characters. All of the major players in the films are people who in one way or another find themselves in a kind of exile. In most cases this exile has been self imposed. The films ask the question, "what makes people who are part of a society (by default) want to escape from it, and when they have escaped, what is their idea of identity?"

The films are made with the discipline of anthropologcal fieldwork at the forefront of the technique. The films, as much documents as possible, are also transparent about the routes taken to achieve the results.

The first film of the trilogy, Notes from the Edge of the East is due for screening in the summer. The other films are under production.

Contained on this site are stills and clips from the films as they arise and there is a blog to check the progress of the work.
